If you have passed through Manhattan’s Chinatown or Brooklyn’s 8th Avenue or Queen’s Flushing, you probably have seen the booths from Chinese food delivery apps like Hungry Panda or Fantuan. They give out freebies like plushies, totes, pins, … if you download the app. Sometimes I noticed a pretty cute item but I have avoided them since I assumed the booths are targeting Chinese speakers.

Well, the other day, I noticed a really cute Fantuan plushie and decided to give it a try. I went to the booth and spoke to the staff. After I downloaded the app and signed up, I just handed her my phone to work on the app. She spoke little English but we didn’t need to talk much anyway. Fantuan also has radically different UI if you select Chinese vs other languages.
